This program is an in-depth discussion of fire-retardant-treated wood (FRTW) characteristics and building code related applications. Emphasis is placed on the testing, performance in a fire and labeling required by the International Building Code.
The building code, as with many products, regulates the use of wood in construction. Two broad categories separate materials: combustible and noncombustible. Codes limit the applications of combustible materials on the basis of fire and life safety.
The question is then, are there options available to using wood in lieu of a combustible material? Fire-retardant treated wood provides that option. Codes recognize FRTW for many applications where a noncombustible material is mandated. These will be covered along with examples shown. 1-hour and 2-hour assemblies will be discussed.
Occupancies, types of construction, and heights and areas, from Chapter 5 and 6 of the IBC, will be covered. In addition, common code violations in framing and methods of repair will be addressed.
