Exam Candidate Information

The information provided on this page is for informational purposes only. Refer to the International Code Council, National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors, the Ohio Board of Building Standards, and your employer for current and authoritative information.

The Ohio Board of Building Standards accepts either the International Code Council (ICC) or the National Certification Program for Construction Code Inspectors (NCPCCI) exams to qualify code officials and inspectors, with specific combinations required depending on your certification level and role. These are open‑book exams based on the model codes Ohio adopts, but the exams themselves are not Ohio‑specific.

Examination is one of several requirements for Ohio certification; other requirements include attendance at the Ohio Building Code Academy, experience, and any education or documentation required by the Board.

The following ICC videos provide practical guidance on preparing for, taking, and following up after your exams. Review the Board of Building Standards' current qualifications/exam requirements, below, for the exam(s) required for your certification.
