Education

The Ohio Building Officials Association provides high‑quality education to support building officials, inspectors, plans examiners, and permit technicians across Ohio with practical training, code updates, and certification-focused learning opportunities.

PPP #1094

OBOA is an approved International Code Council (ICC) Preferred Provider, so many of our classes earn ICC continuing education units (CEUs) and connect Ohio code officials to high‑quality, nationally recognized training aligned with ICC standards. In addition, selected OBOA courses are approved for continuing education credit by the Ohio Board of Building Standards, allowing certified building officials, inspectors, and plans examiners to apply these hours toward their Ohio certification renewal requirements.

Certification Maintenance and Renewal Information

Maintaining your professional certifications is essential for staying current in your field, demonstrating your commitment to industry standards, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. For most of our members, holding an active OBBS certification is required to perform their duties within certified building departments. While ICC certification is optional, it adds significant value—helping you stand out in the job market, remain competitive, and expand your career opportunities both within and beyond Ohio. Keeping your certifications up to date also positions you for advancement to higher OBBS levels and increases your professional portability. See below for information regarding OBBS and ICC certification requirements.

Ohio Board of Building Standards (BBS) certifications are generally renewed every three years, requiring 30 hours of board-approved continuing education (CE). Required CE includes specific hours in code administration, existing buildings, and ethics. Renewals must be completed via the eLicense LPI portal with a $30 fee per certificate.

OBBS is currently developing its new Learning and Professional Improvement (LPI) program. Details on maintaining and renewing OBBS certifications will be provided as soon as they are available.

To maintain and renew your ICC certifications, you’ll need to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through ongoing education and professional development. Here’s how the process works:

1. Earn CEUs

  • Participate in ICC Training, seminars, and other approved courses.
  • View the full list of preferred providers at ppp.iccsafe.org. The Ohio Building Officials Association is an ICC Preferred Provider (#1094).
  • CEUs from ICC Training are automatically recorded in your myICC account. For other activities, enter your CEUs manually and keep proof for your records.

2. Submit CEUs and Renew

  • Log in to your my.iccsafe.org account to submit CEUs and renew your certifications.
  • Certifications must be renewed every three years, before the expiration date.
  • If your certification has expired for fewer than 6 years, you can still renew through your myICC account (additional fees may apply).
  • If expired for more than six years, you can reinstate your certification by logging in and submitting the required number of CEUs—no need to re-test.

3. CEU Requirements

The number of CEUs required depends on how many certifications you’re renewing or reinstating. For example:

  • 1 certification: 3.0 CEUs (1.5 from ICC or Preferred Providers)
  • 2–5 certifications: 6.0 CEUs (3.0 from ICC/PPN)
  • 6–10 certifications: 9.0 CEUs (4.5 from ICC/PPN)
  • 11+ certifications: 12.0 CEUs (6.0 from ICC/PPN)
  • Certified Building Official or Master Code Professional: 12.0 CEUs (6.0 from ICC/PPN)

View the current renewal bulletin, which includes a table of CEU requirements at https://www.iccsafe.org/wp-content/uploads/Renewal_EIB.pdf.

ICC conducts monthly audits. Be sure to retain documentation for all CEUs you submit. If selected for audit, you’ll need to provide proof of CEUs. Legacy certifications from ICBO, BOCA, SBCCI, or CABO are eligible for reinstatement using the same CEU requirements.

Ohio Ethics Law Training

As part of Ohio’s commitment to upholding professional integrity and public trust in government functions, including in the building departments, the state requires all OBBS-certified personnel to complete ethics training. Pursuant to Ohio Administrative Code section 4101:7-3-01(L)(1)(b), a minimum of one hour of ethics coursework must be included with each certification renewal cycle.

OAC 4101:7-3-01(L)(1)(b) Complete at least thirty hours of continuing education prior to the expiration date of the certification for each certification period other than initial certification. Of those thirty hours, education must include at least three hours of continuing education dedicated to the subject of code administration, three hours dedicated to existing buildings, and one hour dedicated to ethics.

Ohio Ethics Law Training is regularly provided at most OBOA and OBOA chapter conferences, and is also available online through the Ohio Ethics Commission at https://ethics.ohio.gov/education/elearning/ecourses.html. Regardless of where you get your training, be sure to retain proof of completion for submission with your renewal application.

Continuing Education Providers

Pursuant to Rule 4101:7‑3‑01(L)(2) of the Ohio Administrative Code, continuing education “provided by or approved by” designated professional organizations—including the Ohio Building Officials Association (OBOA), ICC, NFPA, AIA, and similar groups—is automatically accepted by the Ohio Board of Building Standards for certification renewal, without separate course‑by‑course approval from the Board.

However, each of these organizations independently decides which specific classes it will designate for continuing education credit without separate course-by-course approvals, if any, so not every program or event they offer is automatically eligible for CEUs. For the convenience of our members, we have provided links to these organizations’ education pages.

This list was last updated on 2026‑03‑05. To view the most current list of BBS pre‑approved providers, please visit https://codes.ohio.gov/ohio-administrative-code/rule-4101:7-3-01. The providers and courses linked on this page are offered solely by those organizations; they have not been independently reviewed or endorsed by the Ohio Building Officials Association and are shared for informational purposes only.
